In Fade to Black, the thrilling audiobook sequel to Blackout from David Rosenfelt, policeman Doug Brock helps a fellow victim of amnesia untangle a murder case and discovers he may not be as distant as he thinks.
After getting shot in the line of duty, New Jersey state police officer Doug Brock has been busy rebuilding his life. He's reunited with his fiancé and started to get some of his memories back. He hopes he can continue to recover with the help of an amnesia support group and that the damage from his past isn't permanent.
It isn't until fellow group member Sean Conner approaches him after a meeting that Doug realizes the trouble is just beginning. Sean has discovered in his attic what can only be called a scrapbook of a murder victim, but he has no recollection of the girl's identity or why he might have gathered this information. Doug agrees to help and convinces his captain to open what had been a cold case. When he discovers that he had a personal connection to this case, suddenly he's questioning everything he thought he knew about the case, about Sean, and about his own past.
In the next thrilling audiobook by David Rosenfelt, Doug Brock is back to delight listeners and keep them guessing until the end.

Narrator Fred Berman portrays a tough cop in this first-person thriller. As Berman maintains a good pace, his performance of the character's strong will and wry sense of humor is excellent and believable. Doug Brock is a New Jersey policeman who is recovering from an on-the-job gunshot wound that has resulted in a form of amnesia. With an unreliable memory, he learns new and forgotten social skills to navigate relationships and his job. Friends tell him he's different, but he can't remember what he was like before the injury. The entire police force is on edge as murders take place that are linked to Doug's past. Berman's narration is a good match with the story, hitting the humor with well-placed timing to break up the building tension. L.M.A. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine

In Rosenfelt’s solid sequel to 2016’s Blackout, New Jersey state police officer Doug Brock encounters a man named Sean Conner at an amnesia support group. Conner persuades Brock to reinvestigate a three-year-old case that Brock himself helped solve, but about which he has no recollection, due to memory loss stemming from an on-the-job injury. The subsequent discovery of Conner’s severed head in a park raises the stakes. Brock discovers that the earlier case connects to a conspiracy of organized crime infighting and terrorism that seems tied to drug thefts at a local hospital. Wisecracking Brock is a strong lead in the vein of Rosenfelt’s Andy Carpenter, while his cynical partner, Nate Alvarez, heads up a lively cast of secondary characters that includes a dog named Bobo. Unfortunately, Brock’s girlfriend, Jessie Allen, a fellow cop who specializes in computer crimes, is relegated to a more one-dimensional supporting role. Filled with betrayals, twists, and intuitive leaps, this sometimes far-fetched tale will keep readers turning pages. Agent: Robin Rue, Writers House.
