In this action-packed adventure from #1 New York Times bestselling author Stuart Woods, Stone Barrington learns that privacy is hard to come by when you’re one of the rich and mighty.
As an eligible bachelor, man-about-town, and mover in the highest social echelons, Stone Barrington has always been the subject of interest and gossip. But when he’s unwittingly thrust into the limelight, he finds himself scrambling to take cover. Before too long Stone’s fending off pesky nuisances left and right, and making personal arrangements so surreptitiously it would take a covert operative to unearth them. Unfortunately, Stone soon discovers that these efforts only increase the persistence of the most troublesome pests...and when he runs afoul of a particularly tenacious lady, he’ll be struggling to protect not just his reputation, but his life.

When Democrat Kate Lee wins a second term as president in bestseller Woods’s slow-simmering 42nd Stone Barrington novel (after Fast & Loose), Stone’s old flame Holly Barker becomes secretary of state. Unfortunately for the debonair New York attorney, his rekindled relationship with Holly means unwanted publicity. In particular, he becomes the target of ambitious reporter Gloria Parsons, to whom he grants an interview for Just Folks magazine, a decision he soon comes to regret. Gloria later becomes seriously involved with New York governor Benton Blake, who resigns his post after he and his estranged wife reach a divorce settlement. Benton plans to run for the senate in two years, but Kate’s charismatic son, Peter Rule, is also planning a run for that seat. That Peter’s new wife once had a brief fling with Benton promises complications down the line. A late threat of violence against Stone adds the only real suspense, though its aftermath serves to bring him closer to Holly. Readers will look forward to seeing how Stone and Holly’s romance develops. Agent: Anne Sibbald, Janklow & Nesbit.

How David Case can read this book without breaking into peals of laughter is a wonder. The listener reacts with guffaws and utter disbelief at such hilarious, improbable situations. Satirist Sharpe's second South African novel doesn't just poke fun at whites and blacks, it deftly punctures them, releasing and revealing all their pretenses. David Case's narrative voice is somewhat effete, with a bit of a lisp, a British satirical voice. He presents the variety of voices well, with good differentiation of characters. The narration is well-paced, slowing enough for narrative passages to be understood and distinguishes clearly between dialogue and thought. Biting satire and great comedy! N.H.B.
