Bestselling author David Elliott explores how Joan of Arc changed the course of history and remains a figure of fascination centuries after her extraordinary life and death. Joan of Arc gets the Hamilton treatment in this evocative novel. Told through medieval poetic forms and in the voices of the people and objects in Joan of Arc's life, (including her family and even the trees, clothes, cows, and candles of her childhood), Voices offers an unforgettable perspective on an extraordinary young woman. Along the way it explores timely issues such as gender, misogyny, and the peril of speaking truth to power. Before Joan of Arc became a saint, she was a girl inspired. It is that girl we come to know in Voices.

Three narrators deliver Elliott's multifaceted account of Joan of Arc's life. With a range of characterizations, Celeste Ciulla, Saskia Maarleveld, and Luis Moreno embody Joan's thoughts as well as the people in her life, including those involved with her trial. The story also takes the points of view of Joan's sword and armor. The majority of Elliott's account is told in verse, and the narrators work to preserve meaning without leaning too heavily on the rhyme scheme. The pacing gradually builds as Joan reaches the end of her life, when the narrative switches between past and present, characters and objects, to build a more complete picture of Joan's experiences. This is an accessible narrative regardless of one's knowledge of Joan's life. K.S.B. © AudioFile 2019, Portland, Maine
