Daphne Marriott strolls into Clover Ridge and informs librarian Carrie Singleton that she's a psychic. But if she had foreseen what fate awaited her, Daphne would have steered clear of the quaint Connecticut town. Evelyn, the library ghost, tells Carrie that there's more to Daphne than she lets on.The mysterious woman grew up in Clover Ridge with her no-good dad, who apparently met his end at the hands of Daphne's brother, Billy. Still, Daphne proves a welcome distraction when Carrie's overbearing mother hits town. Mom's much younger husband, Tom, is in a movie that's lensing locally, and she's there to keep an eye on him: Tom's costar, sultry Ilana Reingold, is also his ex-fiancée, and there's no denying the chemistry is still there. Soon after mingling with the moviemakers at a meet-and-greet, Daphne is found dead.Carrie and Evelyn investigate, assisted by bushy-tailed library cat Smoky Joe. But the suspect list could overflow the library shelves. Has Billy killed another relative? Is their long-missing mother involved? Is Daphne's mean ex-husband? Carrie's sure she knows who committed the crime, but can she bind together the clues before the culprit Dewey-decimates the town?

In this audiobook, a psychic is killed 20 years after her father was murdered. Though librarian Carrie Singleton is determined not to get involved in any more murders, people keep asking for her help. The ghost librarian, Evelyn, gives Carrie insight into the town's past. In her first-person narration, Mia Gaskin gives a strong performance, clearly demonstrating Carrie's conflict over whether to investigate or stay out it. Gaskin uses well-defined voices for each of the many characters while keeping the mood of the story upbeat. V.M.G. © AudioFile 2020, Portland, Maine

In Brook’s overly intricate fourth mystery featuring Carrie Singleton, the head of programs and events at the Clover Ridge, Conn., library (after 2019’s Buried in the Stacks), Carrie must contend with her distant mother and movie actor stepfather, who are visiting, as well as self-proclaimed psychic Daphne Marriott, who befriends Carrie and has a troubled past. That past apparently catches up with Daphne when someone strangles her. Meanwhile, quite a few people have changed their names for one reason or another, which gets confusing, and some of them are connected to the local Harper family. Years earlier, the abusive Chet Harper was murdered by his son, Billy Harper, and Carrie learns that she knows Billy under another name and that Daphne was his sister. After a second present-day murder occurs, Carrie; her PI boyfriend, Dylan Avery; and the Clover Ridge police chief, John Mathers, set out to find the killer. Evelyn Havers, the library’s resident ghost and Carrie’s sleuthing confidante, has little to do. This cozy is strictly for existing fans. Agent: Dawn Dowdle, Blue Ridge Literary.
