Advancing Korean Science and Tackling Humanity’s Greatest Challenges Through Nanomedicine • The Institute for Basic Science(IBS) Center for Nanomedicine is pursuing research centered on MAGIC, a magnetogenetics technology. Inspired by the hypothesis that migratory birds and other homing animals navigate by sensing Earth’s magnetic field, MAGIC combines nanotechnology and genetic engineering to control neural circuits remotely and wirelessly using magnetic fields. The technology could open new avenues for brain research and the treatment of brain disorders. Jinwoo Cheon, Director of the IBS Center for Nanomedicine, has led innovation in the field. He plans to keep developing technologies that could be used to treat disease while seeking Korean scientific innovations that can improve people’s lives and contribute to future industries.

Advancing Research on Brain Disease Prediction, Diagnosis, and Personalized Treatment • Dr. Jong-hyuk Yoon of the Korea Brain Research Institute (KBRI) is building a multidimensional molecular atlas of the brain using multi-omics data. His work aims to clarify how the brain functions at the molecular level, characterize the molecular pathology of brain diseases in their early stages, and develop foundational technologies for early diagnosis and treatment. Alongside advances in artificial intelligence, brain-computer interfaces, brain organoids, and molecular brain atlases, Dr. Yoon is helping build a brain lipidomics platform and using omics and data science to investigate the mechanisms underlying brain diseases and cancer. He intends to keep pursuing new discoveries.

From the Sandbox to the Formal System, Fintech Center Korea Bridges the Market and the Financial Authorities as the Token Securities Regime Nears Implementation • The token securities legislation was passed by the National Assembly on January 15, 2026, three years after the Financial Services Commission (FSC) unveiled its Measures to Overhaul Regulatory System on the Issuance and Circulation of Security Tokens. The amended Act on Electronic Registration of Stocks, Bonds, Etc. (the Electronic Securities Act), promulgated on February 3, takes effect in 2027. Block-chain-based distributed ledgers will be recognized as legal securities account books, and investment contract securities, which had previously been effectively barred from secondary trading, will also be come tradable through securities firms. Before this, only six companies in the entire history of the sandbox had been designated for both the issuance and the circulation of non-monetary trust beneficiary certificates. Back-gyu Sung, General Manager of the Industry Information Department at Fintech Center Korea, has been in charge of the Financial Regulatory Sandbox for the past seven years, meeting companies that arrived with every kind of underlying asset imaginable, from films and webtoons to intellectual property and construction equipment, and seeing firsthand the gap between regulation and the market. This year he has also taken overall charge of Korea Fintech Week 2026, to be held in November at the aT Center in Yangjae. The legislation has been enacted, but discussions over issuance requirements and ledger standards are still underway. We asked Back-gyu Sung...
