The French Falcon • It didn’t hit the heights of its sister car, 65E, better known as Allan Moffat’s 1971 Bathurst 500-winning Falcon GTHO, but John French’s Phase III is one of the chosen-three, specially-built works team XY GTHOs – and, as can be seen, it lives on today.

Moffat’s five-car trick • It took five cars and a herculean effort from his small band of helpers for Allan Moffat to get it done in 1976. Steve Normoyle reflects on Moffat’s remarkable, and often under-appreciated, double championship success half a century ago.

Humpy heaven

Stirling effort • It was indeed a sterling effort to put together in just a matter of months what is still the most illustrious driver pairing in the history of the Great Race – even half a century later. The Bathurst comeback partnership of Jack Brabham and Stirling Moss in a Torana might just have been the biggest news in world motorsport in 1976 outside of Niki Lauda’s F1 horror crash inferno; unfortunately, however, we never did get to see how these two retired grand prix legends might have fared against our own touring car stars.

Gun Smith for hire • We might remember him as the mastermind behind Allan Moffat’s barnstorming 1977 touring car racing season, but Carroll Smith had been there and done almost everything before he ventured down under to work for Moffat – and that wasn’t even his first sojourn in Australia. His career in the sport began with him working on race cars in Italy; he was part of the Shelby American Ford GT40 Le Mans program in the 1960s, then went on to mentor generations of young drivers and engineers.
