The Cottage Journal

Of the Season • Tyler’s advice for working with dried blooms, greenery, and natural elements of the season.

Coffee & COMMUNITY

the VERMONT COUNTRY STORE • There are few stores in the United States that provide the nostalgia as well as The Vermont Country Store does. As the brand celebrates their 80th year, we went for a visit to their original location in Weston, Vermont, to learn more about the family behind it and to experience what we can only describe as stepping back into a bygone era.

Take a stroll down WARREN Street • For the last few decades, Warren Street in Hudson, New York, has been a cultural and antiques center for the greater Hudson Valley. The street, which operates as the main commerce corridor of the town, is lined with small businesses and mom-and-pop shops and almost entirely void of anything corporate. When we think of autumn and leaf-peeping, the Hudson River town of Hudson is a must-visit, even if just for a quick trip to Olana and a stroll down Warren Street. The following are a few of our personal favorite shops to visit, listed in order from closest to the river to the farthest.

CABIN on the CREEK • Inspired by her client’s happy childhood memories, interior designer Lacy Phillips created a family cabin on a creek layered with heart and soul.

A Day at HANCOCK SHAKER VILLAGE • Historic buildings, baby animals, traditional crafts, and one of the country’s most remarkable barns make Hancock Shaker Village one of the Berkshires’ most enjoyable day trips.

The SHAKER PURSUIT of QUALITY • For the better part of the 18th and 19th centuries, Shaker communities set the standard for quality and craftsmanship in everything they used and produced. What is left behind is a legacy of simplistic and utilitarian style, done just right.

PIGMENT and PROCESS • An Exploration of Color in Shaker Life

The SHAKERS’ GARDEN Pharmacy • From Mount Lebanon’s Shaker Swamp to the gardens and fields of Hancock Shaker Village, the Shakers transformed carefully tended gardens and wild native growing environments into living pharmacies. Cultivating medicinal herbs, preserving heirloom seeds, and building one of America’s earliest commercial seed businesses, their gardening legacy still shapes the way we grow and value our gardens today.

A Year at BOVINA FARM & FERMENTORY AUTUMN • Over the next few issues, we’ll be taking you into the four seasons at one of our favorite places in the U.S., Bovina Farm & Fermentory in Bovina, New York. Located outside the tiny town deep in the western Catskills, this place that we can best describe as a supper club and inn has been welcoming folks from across the globe for their weekly farm-to-table meals and remote stays. There are few places that are serving as truly local of a menu as Elizabeth Sparks and Jacob Sackett have brought to life.

THREADS of HISTORY: A Conversation with Justin Squizzero • Justin Squizzero is a handweaver based in Newbury, Vermont, where he balances weaving, teaching, running The Newbury School of Weaving, and caring for a small farm. Known for his deep study of historic textiles and traditional weaving techniques, he has built a career around keeping old skills in active use. We spoke with Justin about how he got started, what draws him to historic textiles, and the remarkable 19th-century Jacquard loom tucked away in his attic.

WOLF COVE INN • You’ve likely seen Wolf Cove Inn, the inn in Poland, Maine, on some social platform with their viral videos. The couple behind the inn left...
