In this atmospheric Southern cozy debut, Madeline Brimley returns to the bookstore she inherited, discovering that small towns hold deadly secrets.

Madeline Brimley left small-town Georgia many years ago to go to college and pursue her dreams on the stage. Her dramatic escapades are many, but success has eluded her, leaving her at loose ends. But then she gets word that not only has her beloved, eccentric Aunt Rose passed, but she's left Madeline her equally eccentric bookstore housed in an old Victorian mansion in the small college town of Enigma. But when she arrives in her beat-up Fiat to claim The Old Juniper Bookstore—and restart her life—Madeline is faced with unexpected challenges. The gazebo in the backyard is set ablaze, and a late-night caller threatens to burn the whole store down if she doesn't leave immediately.

But Madeline Brimley, not one to be intimidated, ignores the threats and soldiers on. Until there's another fire and a murder in the store itself. Now, with a cloud of suspicion falling over her, it's up to Madeline to untangle the skein of secrets and find the killer before she herself is the next victim.

As many listeners have observed, murderers, like readers, are drawn to bookstore settings. In this cozy mystery set in the small town of Enigma, Georgia, listeners learn about a vicious murder in the bookstore recently inherited by an actress named Madeline, niece of the former owner. Narrator Hallie Bee Bard does an outstanding job of portraying the accent, tone, and tempo of Southern voices to bring these characters to life. While Madeline is the most amateur of amateur detectives--she makes snap decisions and is usually wrong in her analysis of clues--she is diverting, and the plot moves along. The audiobook has witty repartee and humor, some clever and some cornball. This is the beginning of a new series revolving around the bookstore. D.L.G. © AudioFile 2025, Portland, Maine

Madeline once had big dreams of leaving Enigma, GA, and becoming an acclaimed actor like her Aunt Rose. Now she has lost both her plans for fame and her beloved aunt. Learning that Rose bequeathed her eclectic bookstore to her feels like a lifeline, and Madeline returns to Enigma and all the memories it holds. The Georgia weather may be sweltering, but it really turns on the heat when Madeline starts receiving threatening phone calls insisting that she leave town. When someone is murdered in Madeline's home, Madeline suspects she was the intended target and must find the killer before they come back to finish the job. Writing under a pseudonym, novelist, actor, dramatist, and professor Nelson makes a compelling debut with this intricate, atmospheric cozy, the first in a series. Narrator Hallie Bee Bard gives an expressive performance of Madeline's first-person perspective. Paired with rich detail and mild suspense, the likable main character's amateur detective antics translate to an engaging listening experience. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a gentle mystery about bookshops, small towns, and secrets. Recommended for fans of Tamara Berry, Amanda Flower, and Ellery Adams.--Lauren Hackert
