Railway Modeller

Aug 01 2026
Magazine

Still Britain's most popular model railway monthly magazine with over 800 issues published since it was launched. Always at the very heart of the hobby, and justly proud of its policy to cover all the scales and gauges and topics of interest to both ready-to-run enthusiasts and kit and scratchbuilders alike.

Railway Modeller

Welcome • Model railways in the limelight

The Daws Heath Garden Railway • CRAIG TILEY visits PAUL BARNARD to discover the story behind his spectacular garden railway, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Little Ashton

Furness Railway 10-ton goods brake van • IAN NUTTALL describes how he set about constructing an esoteric item of rolling stock for use on his OO gauge Settle & Carlisle layout.

Operating Keighley Northern • ANDREW HARTLAND describes how he devised a plausible operating sequence for his fictional OO gauge portrayal of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1937, set in West Yorkshire, which featured as Railway of the Month in the April issue.

80 years of the S Scale Model Railway Society • Falling in between the established OO and O gauges, S scale offers much for the modeller interested in scratch-building, with support from a thriving society. Chairman PAUL GREENE tells its story.

Whatever happened to ... Totnes • JERRY CLIFFORD recalls the history of this spectacular N gauge model, built by the late JOHN BIRKETT-SMITH , which will be making its final public appearance at Railwells this August.

Gaugemaster – thinking big with Model Giant • As well as having more than 50 years’ experience of manufacturing layout control equipment, Gaugemaster has established itself as a major distributor of British and overseas model railway products to the UK trade. Another key part of the Gaugemaster business empire is its large retail operation, which was recently the subject of a complete rebrand and refresh. RM Editor Craig Tiley visited the West Sussex-based company to find out more…

A brush with steam • The late British artist David Shepherd CBE is renowned for his paintings of wildlife and transport subjects, together with his work as a conservationist and preservationist, but less well known was his love of model railways. STEPHEN MOOR recounts the story behind a 3mm scale layout formerly owned by David, part of which is now on display at the East Somerset Railway.

Going outside • BOB HORDERN constructed a demountable outdoor extension to turn his garage-based U-shaped layout into a ‘fair weather’ continuous run.

A Hull & Barnsley H1 Class 2-4-0 in 7mm • NICK DUNHILL describes how what started as a one-off video tutorial exercise, for the Gauge O Guild YouTube channel, subsequently developed into a full locomotive build project, which was completed in stages over a five-year period in support of a charitable cause.

Nant Gwernol

Adding further realism to card shop fronts • Previously in these pages, ADRIAN COOK has revealed the methods he uses to create 4mm scale building frontages from card and other everyday materials. Here, he explains how layering techniques and the use of photos can add even greater realism.

Symonds Park • For his entry in the Peco RAIL200 Model Layout Competition, HARRY SYMONDS built a small OO9 circuit, inspired by his local miniature railway.
